Bachelor Programs
Since the winter term 2012/2013, the Bachelor’s degree program Islamic-Religious Studies can be pursued at FAU. You can choose between a major and a minor study program.
1-Subject Degree Islamic-Religious Studies
The Bachelor’s degree in Islamic-Religious Studies constitutes an offer related to Islam with the characteristics of a theological basic study program (1-subject-BA, 6 semesters). It qualifies for existing, as well as new, areas of work and prepares the student for a subsequent research-based Master’s degree.
The BA IRS regards normative, analytical, methodological, discursive, and practically relevant approaches to Islam. It places the necessary basis for it in the Arabic literary language as reference of Islamic source texts. In reference to Islam as a religious interpretation system it incorporates systematic, practical, ethical, and philosophical aspects.
The BA IRS initiates specific operational competence and personal commitment in special religious-related areas: for instance in spiritual counseling, ritual practice, community affairs, youth work, and pedagogical management (instrumental, generic, and communicative competences). After the basic requirements, elective subjects allow for the choice of a personal study focus.

2-Subject Degree Islamic-Religious Studies
The 2-subject Bachelor’s degree in Islamic-Religious Studies can only be studied as Minor. The program aims at students who want to establish specific social science or cultural studies competences by focusing on “Islam.” Students who choose this Minor must conduct 110 ECTS in their Major study program, since they can only gain 70 ECTS in the 2-subject degree IRS and cannot write their bachelor’s thesis here. Accordingly, their graduation is based on their major study program (e. g. Sociology with a focus on Islam). The 2-subject degree in IRS is suitable for students who aim at providing social consultation in the course of their careers. Evermore, experts – who can advise political actors (communities, federal states, parties), economic players, public administration, medical institutes, and the media – are needed to counsel in regard to specific, Islam-related questions (theological backgrounds, religious regulations, differences between cultures, ways of life, etc.). The career prospects are, in fact, various.
